Bow thruster
The TMS bow
thruster series have been designed so as to make their application
as versatile as possible. First, designed for passenger's
vessels, their application range on yachts have been extende,
maintaining the same rigid design criteria required for
larger ships.
The TMS bow thruster can be operated by an electrical, hydraulic
or mechanical transmission, according to the specific needs.
The prime mover, flanged to the propeller pod, operates
a bevel gear, which transmits the power to the shaft. The
mechanical gears are made of high tensile material, providing
a long working life even under heavy duty conditions.
Particular care was given to the design of the gear adpoting
a Gleason tooth profile. This guarantees excellent efficiency
of the transmission while providing considerable noise reduction
compared to other design options.
In order to lower the noise inside the hull even further,
the transmission is coupled to the prime mover utilising
an elastic coupling and shock absorbers.
The pod shape derives from the need of reducing the hydrodynamic
drag to a minimum. In order to minimise the flow resistance;
the pressure distirbution on the thruster body has been
thoroughly analysed, considering its assembling inside the
tunnel. The advanced propeller design provides a high propulsive
efficiency, avoiding any cavitation effects under all operational
conditions. This is important since cavitation causes great
loss of thrust as well as noise and vibration.
